How to update Listbox .NET

Well, it seemed to me a very trivial task to update a list box. Bind your listbox to a datasource, make changes in datasource and expect listbox to update own its own. Little I realised how wrong was I in assuming the same. Since most of the datasources don’t have notification events while updating their contents, listbox never knows to update itself when a programmer updates a datasource. So what’s the best way to handle this issue. Best way is to refresh your listbox every time you make changes to underlying datasource and remember to set datasource to null first and then bind to actual datasource. Something like below

private void BindListBox()
{
       listboxInstance.DataSource = null;
       listboxInstance.DataSource = actualDataSource;
       listboxInstance.DisplayMember = "property of underlying object to display"           // can be left out 
}

I hope this helps all those programmers who have spent some part of their time, banging their heads against wall and wondering why their listboxes weren’t updating. If there is some better way or I have made some mistakes, please feel free to let me know.

Totally Blank !!!

So my 7 months hiatus from my career is coming to an end. With my last exam next sunday, I am totally confused what to do next. Apart from squash and few indigenous plans, which I know are very stupid and tough to implement, I have nothing to do.

This break has been very fruitful, rather insightful to me. This break has taught me what my 2 years of professional career couldn’t. I have learned to move away from technology and start thinking of business independent of technology. Now technology is a means to achieve an end, which is success in business. I understand that business will continue, whether we implement right technology or not, but I also understand that with correct technology, the same business can be done in much efficient manner. I hope to take this understanding and focus more on business side rather than tech.

This break has also taught me that books are the best thing to upgrade yourself. A profession binds you to its own intricacies, and hence we tend to ignore the world around us. To grow as an individual, one needs to learn from the society around him, the history and the future envisaged by our leaders and books are the only amalgamation of these. I would urge everybody to pick a book on regular basis and should make it a point to complete it.

Lastly and more importantly, this break has taught me the importance of discipline and practice in learning. To elaborate, one cannot learn everything at one go. If one needs to excel in something, there is no other way than to take small but effective steps towards final goal. I have been taking squash seriously for some time and to excel in that I have tried to learn small concepts of it, practice and then move on to the next step. This approach may look very slow but considering the fact that being consistent in this approach over a long period of time, one can learn a lot more than those people who try to learn everything in small span of time and usually give up due to steep learning curve associated with that process. Small steps taken over a long period can conquer even the longest distances.

Looking ahead, I dont know what to expect at the end of this break, but whatever I have loved every moment of this break and now I want to go back to work.

AALL IZ WELL …

I was watching Rajkumar Hirani’s “3 Idiots” other day. There is a sequence in the movie where Amir Khan explains the concept behind “AALL IZ WELL” to his friends, Sharman Joshi and R Mahadevan. He says that simply reciting these magical words won’t solve your problems but will fool your heart and give it the strength to face those problems. Nice joke, but the next thought that struck me was that – ‘isn’t this is the same thing what we all call GOD’.

Even god doesn’t solve your problems, but it seems it gives people the strength to bear their bad times and work through them. Every man has solutions to his problems. Still people do anything to seek god’s blessings, which I think is a way to dispel their own fears of failure. This explanation leads to my next conundrum. If this is simply the god, then how do you define terror in the name of God ?

No idea, I need to think more !!

While trying to sleeping today i was wodering, when was the last time i had talked to somebody till latenight. I remember days when i used to talk with friends late into nights, sometime till dawn. These days I hardly talk with somebody beyond 11 pm. Seems life has turned full circle for me. From being an introvert to chatterbox, and now forced to limit myself again. I wonder what’s next.

Rarely you see a creation which reaches out to you and tantalises your grey matter. It makes you sit and watch how it unfolds its wings and fly in your imaginations. This video titles as “Light & Shadow” is an awesome tableau by Ignited Minds, a group from Maruti Udyog. It was very nice to see how a simple presentation was made alive by some vivid imagination.

Analysis Of Issue – 1

Argument : “Clearly, government has a responsibility to support the arts. However, if that support is going to produce anything of value, government must place no restrictions on the art that is produced.”

Art and artists have always been patronised by kings and nobles since ages. I believe in the modern era, the government needs to play the same role and hence support art. Government need to support art by giving it the freedom, facilities and promotion it needs.

Artists need freedom to express their ideas. They always show the true face of society through their paintings, movies, stories, and other forms of artistic expression. This portrayal of socities’ hypocrisies has always found oppression of some kind or other. Government needs to play an active role here. It should protect art and artist from so called ‘messiahs’ of society.

The government also need to formulate good laws which shall prevent Intellectual Rights of artists. Plagiarism in any form is undesirable and harmful both to art and artist. The government should actively participate to eradicate these malpractices at every level.

Lastly, but not the least, art is a source of revenue for nation. It attracts tourists, both national and international, and helps to spread nation’s culture all over the world. The artists need world class museums, protection from vandalism and promotion of their creative artifacts. This again is a major responsibility for government to provides such facilities.

In the conclusion, i would like to state the fact that art is like any other part of society which needs support of government for proper growth and nourishment.

WTF is this ? Siddhesh can’t look so smart; he hasn’t since the time doctor’s first slapped on his butts and forced him to cry, he was mumbling some football facts which doctors couldn’t understand. But anyways he cant look so smart, so how come he looks so right now ? Am I dreaming, oh yeah i am dreaming. There are too many hot chics around, and going by the statistical analysis, if there are more than 1 hot chic around an engineer, he ought to be dreaming, hence proved its a dream.

Well looks like a good dream. No harm in enjoying . Well even if Siddhesh wants me to click some snaps of his, sounds like a nice deal. If that’s the only thing I need to do to stay here, i can do that and don’t forget, he is actually smiling today. Well so here it is, few click – clicks. Now, he will come running like Pankaj and will view each and every snap of his. Ahh, anyways, meanwhile let me enjoy few chics.

Siddhesh – ” Naveen what is this, you didn’t even take a single snap of mine clearly. See in each of the snap this girl is in the shot.”
Me – “What girl, there ain’t any. I took a clear snap of you.”
Siddhesh – “Look on your own, at your masterpiece. Even baba can take a snap better than you.” I knew he is pointing to the incident at appu ghar, when baba clicked a snap in which we couldn’t see anything else than his own fat finger.

“Ahh , he has already started sounding like a manager ,freak !!” – I said to myself.
“Fuck, what is this, i mean who is this ( suddenly remembering my English coaching lessons ). She wasn’t there when i clicked Sid? ” – I said to myself.
“Her pic is not very sharp, very blur compare to that of mine. She looks more like a ghost, ha ha ha ” – and Sid started laughing. I don’t understand, what is there to laugh. I couldn’t understand his jokes even at college, but now they seem to have become more sophisticated.

“It ought to be blur, because the focus was set for you and she is quite out of the focus range.” – I said, thinking the best way to keep his mouth shut is to throw some techie jargon on him. Like all managers, he couldn’t understand it and didn’t disturb me any further.

Anyways i need to find this girl who spoilt my shot. I went to the same spot where I was standing while clicking pics, and I started tracing back the spot where Sid was standing. Everything looks fine, there is no way this could be a reflection on my lens from some distant mirror. Then how come this girl. I am dead sure that there was no girl before. I didn’t intend to spoil Siddhesh’s pic, which i knew would be first thing on orkut tomorrow morning, could even make it early depending on pic. Let me look again at the spot.
“Nah nothing, wait wait wait, yeah see there is something odd over there, just under the pillar.” I looked at the spot with camera in front of me and i could see same girl standing. OK so there it is, reflection from some mirror or something else around here playing tricks. I saw around. No nothing. Every wall is draped with curtains. No water pool around. I cant find any source of reflection.

Hmm strange, i again took out my camera and looked at the reflection. Yeah she is definitely there. I started to focus my camera on her, to get a better look at her. Well strange, the reflection has disappeared. I focused my camera at the spot where Sid was standing and her reflection appears again. I found it strange, a little frustrated, as i kept my camera on a nearby table. I looked at the spot under the pillar again, i cannot see anything clear with naked eyes, just some blur reflection there. Wait, I picked up my camera again in a hurry and looked through the camera. Fuck, she doesn’t move. She just doesn’t move, but maintains same posture, as if hanging in the air. I hurriedly opened previous pics and looked at those. Same posture in all the pics, though Sid is dancing in the background.

Is she really a ghost, a chill ran down my spine. I couldn’t believe what i was seeing. I looked again at the spot with camera, sid pics and indeed she is there. I tried looking at the spot with naked eyes and I could see some faint reflection there. This is not real. Suddenly the hot chics around me started vanishing and were replaced by suitable bawana candidates, the ones i used to find in RTV .Sid became normal ( i mean he started speaking again of lampard as his first love, instead of lost chics around ), and now i could clearly see the hanging girl with my naked eyes. She still maintained the same posture. I went near to her, her eyes were closed and she looked as if in some kind of a deep sleep. I looked at her face, she looks cute ( come on pervert, she is a prospective ghost ). I thought the best way to check is to touch her and feel what ghost feel like, if she is one. Ideally according to endless B – grade Bollywood movies, my hand should just go through her , as if in thin air. I looked around to ensure nobody is watching, zeroed down on the best spot to touch, , and as i was about to touch her, she opened her eyes. Those were the deadliest eyes i had ever seen. Had a color of blood in them. She almost killed me.

And then she moved. She moved her hand gracefully towards me, at the same spot I was about to touch of her. I can see her hand moving closer to me. “Man this is not good” – I thought. I wanted to get out.
“Somebody please end this dream. Dad, please kick me out of my bed, as you do daily. Kaam wali bai, please start complaining to my mom about the new washing soap. Somebody do something to wake me up.”

“Oh, where is the party, is this my bed? Yes this is my bed, oh god i am awake, thankfully awake”, and i thanked to god as i turned around.
“This chic sleeping next to me must be really tired. I must have mumbled a lot during the dream and she didn’t wake. Tired chic!”, i pity at her.
“Wait a sec, when was the last time i went to bed with a chic. Hmmm, never. “ The god had already bartered my privilege to sleep with a chic, when he wrote an engineering career in my destiny. Well same goes for every engineer.
“Then who is she ? “, as i turned around to see her face. “Fuck she is the same hanging girl, man dream is still not over ! Somebody pull me out of this dream, please !!! “
Phew… i am in a bed again.
“Is the dream over?”.
I don’t have courage to turn around and find that girl still in my bed. It hurts. Firstly, it reminds me of my destiny, and secondly, come on she is a ghost, how cute may be. But I need to turn around and confirm that if dream is over or I start praying again. I can’t turn around, the idea to find her in my bed is too deadly.

OK, let me do what all these aunties do in these saas – bahu serial. When they wake up in their bed, instead of opening their eyes and look for their husband, they will mover their hands all over the bed. I always use to think that these aunties actually practice for sweeping while sleeping. Anyways, i did same and guess what, like aunties I found my bed clean after that sweeping. I turned around to find my breath slowly returning to me. This is real. I can pinch myself.

Whats next, i cant sleep again. The idea of finding her again in my bed is too deadly. I need to talk to somebody. Well at this time, only two breed of people are awake. Either chowkidaars or MBA students. Oh yeah, i quickly took out my cell and dialled none other than baniya. I knew, he would be awake and he was, rubbing his ass over some presentation. I felt so relieved to know that somebody is actually giving him some pleasure behind him, something he was used to give others . Anyways after a long chat with baniya i knew one thing for sure, even the ghost wont dare to touch me again. Even she fears baniya and i went to bed looking for some sound sleep.

Ananlysis of Argument – Topic 1

Topic : During a recent trial period in which government inspections at selected meat-processing plants were more frequent, the amount of bacteria in samples of processed chicken decreased by 50 percent on average from the previous year’s level. If the government were to institute more frequent inspections, the incidence of stomach and intestinal infections throughout the country could thus be cut in half. In the meantime, consumers of Excel Meats should be safe from infection because Excel’s main processing plant has shown more improvement in eliminating bacterial contamination than any other plant cited in the government report.

The argument presented here is devoid of some very basic facts, which make one believe that the conclusion derived may not be correct. Also the idea that consumers of Excel’s Meats are safer than consumer’s of any other meat product could again be farther from reality if needful information is provided.

Firstly the argument itself points out that the reduction in bacterial amount is a result of government’s trial inspections at meat manufacturing industries. The question arises that whether manufacturers will stick to these quality levels once the trial inspections are over or they will again get back to their old ways. It is a known fact that manufacturers seldom stick to quality guidelines. It is the responsibility of government to ensure that these guidelines are met, hence it is very essential that these inspections are frequent and stringent.

Secondly the argument stresses on the fact that amount of bacteria has decreased due to improved manufacturing process. The argument fails to address the fact that apart from manufacturing processes there are various sources which can contaminate the processed meat. The meat can be infected due to faulty packaging, improper storage conditions and mishandling while transporting. Without knowing these facts, one cannot be sure of the meat’s quality. To declare some company’s meat as safe for consumption just because of its manufacturing capabilities may not be a good idea if we look at facts not presented here.

Since the argument leaves out vital information, it is far from being conclusive. It leaves a lot of facts and information for assumption and hence it is far from being convincing.

First of all thanks to all of you guys who are taking out time for reviewing my AWA essays. I would henceforth writing an essay every day or two and would be thankful if you can judge my essay on following criteria :

Is essay coherent? Is there a flow missing while reading essays? Do you feel that structure of passage can be improved, if yes please let me know.
Grammar and spelling errors . Cant help it. Well MS word will help me with spelling mistakes, only you guys can point out my silly grammatical mistakes.
Also if you feel that there is a point I have missed while analyzing the topic, please let me know.
